Internship application process and workplace details
This page outlines how to apply for our summer internship, how the recruitment process works, and what you can expect in the workplace during your internship.

Eligibility and application
- Who can apply: Tertiary students in their final year at university, polytechnic or vocational training, and graduates who have completed tertiary studies in the last 2 years.
- Academic requirements: Various placements are on offer. Depending on the role, there is a preference for related degree or study – refer to the list of host government agencies and roles. You may be asked to provide your academic transcript at the offer stage.
- Application deadline: Applications close Friday 5 September at midnight.
- Preferred agency/role: In your application, you can mention which roles and organisations you are interested in and what background, skills and interests align with the role. We will do our best to do match interns with the host agency and team where you can best thrive and grow.

Recruitment process
- We will review applications against minimum criteria, and assess candidates’ motivations, skills and background against the roles available.
- Depending on applicant numbers, we may contact you to get to know you more by email, phone or online call.
- We will invite you to meet face-to-face to learn more about your skills, strengths, experiences.
- Informal offer and reference checking.
- Once references are completed, you will receive an offer letter from the host agency.
When you will hear back about your application
We will be reviewing applications as they come. You will hear back from us by Friday 12 September.
Programme structure
Onboarding and training
- On your first day, you will attend a mihi whakatau and be introduced to your host manager and team. You will also have an orientation session on how the programme will run and the chance to meet and connect with fellow interns.
- In your first week, you will go through an induction session with your host manager to learn more about your host agency, team and how your role contributes to them.
- Training is mostly on-the-job, with regular coaching, shadowing, and mentoring. You will also attend workshops with other interns.
A typical day
A typical day varies depending on the job. You might start the day:
- attending a team catch-up where people share updates about their work
- undertaking research, writing a report, joining a meeting, or organising an event
- attending a workshop with fellow interns.
Networking opportunities
Interns will have opportunities to meet senior public service leaders, and each other.
Support and contact
- Interns will be supported by a direct manager/supervisor who will welcome you to their team, assign work to you and meet with you regularly to chat and guide your work.
- A buddy will support you during your onboarding and induction.
- A mentor will be assigned to coach successful interns, provide career advice and share learnings and insights.
- There will be regular catchups for interns to connect and support one another.
- Your host organisation will provide you with information about their employee-led networks, social activities and wellbeing resources.
- You’ll receive a career support session in your last month to help build your confidence and be prepared to take your next career step.
