Through his work, Sir Robert advocated for a more accessible and inclusive world for disabled people. Among his many achievements Sir Robert was the first person with a learning disability to be appointed as an independent expert on the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disablities.

Paula Tesoriero MNZM reflects on the impact of Sir Robert,

”For many of us at Whaikaha, we knew Sir Robert as an advocate, an ally, and a friend. Today, and every day going forward we reflect together on his life and his achievements. Personally, I will forever be changed by knowing such a generous, kind, and thoughtful person. Sir Robert made it his life’s work to advance disability rights.

I join many disabled people today expressing gratitude for the work of Sir Robert.”

In 2023, Sir Robert was announced alongside Gary Williams MNZM as Patrons for the Ministry’s My Home My Choice, a programme focused on the work needed to transform the way people in residential services are assisted so they have more choice and control in their lives.

Through this work, Sir Robert continued his vision of everyone having an independent life.

“On behalf of Whaikaha, I would like to extend our sympathy to Sir Robert’s wife Lady Lynda, his family, friends and People First Ngā Tāngata Tuatahi community.

Sir Robert’s generosity, humility, and passion will continue to be a shining light for us.”
