Many people rely on petrol or diesel to get to work, take children to school, or travel to important places.
When fuel prices are high, these tips from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) can help you use less fuel when you drive.

Increased mileage rates for home and community support workers
From 2 April 2026, the Government is increasing how much contracted support workers are paid for using their own cars.
The mileage rate is increasing by 30 percent. It is going up from 63.5 cents to 82.5 cents per kilometre.
This change helps cover the higher cost of fuel.

Support for families as fuel prices rise
From 1 April 2026, the Government is increasing the in-work tax credit, paid by Inland Revenue. It is for families:
- with children
- where at least 1 parent is in paid work
- who are not receiving a main benefit, or a student allowance, at the same time.
